Shabbat or in English Sabbath is the sacred 7th day on which G-d rested from performing the work of creation. It is so holy that even if a fast day, for example Tisha B’av were to fall on it, the fast would be postponed to the day after in honor of Shabbas day. The only day more important is Yom Kippur, on which if it fell on the Shabbas, Jews would still keep the laws of Yom Kippur. The Sabbath (in Hebrew, <\/i>pronounced shah-BAHT\u2013or in some communities, Shabbos<\/i>, \u201cSHAH-bis\u201d) may be Judaism\u2019s most distinctive and characteristic practice, as well as one of its most pervasive and long-lasting gifts to Western civilization. A weekly 25-hour observance, from just before sundown each Friday through the completion of nightfall on Saturday, Shabbat is more than just a day off from labor. It is a day of physical and spiritual delights that is meant to illuminate certain key concepts in the traditional Jewish perception of the world.<\/p>\n
